Introduction to School of Foreign Languages

School of Foreign Languages, formerly known as English Teaching and Research Section of WenshanNormal School, was established in 1978; it was restructured as Department of English of Wenshan Teachers’ Collegein 2004; then it was renamed as Department of Foreign Languages after Wenshan Teachers’ College had been upgraded to a degree-awarding institutionin 2009; School of Foreign Languages was set upin September 2013.

Office of General Affairs, Office of Teaching and Scientific Research, Office of Non-common Languages, Office of College Foreign Languages, Officeof Student Affairs, Office of Chinese Communist Youth League and Student Union have been set up to facilitate the administration of School of Foreign Languages. General Party Branch consists of Branch of Staff and Branch of Students; there are 17 classes, covering 625 students, 593 of whom are undergraduates (320 English majors, 111 Vietnamese majors and 162 Thai majors), 32 junior college students and more than 100 students who receive adult correspondence education as English and Vietnamesemajors.4 majors including English, Vietnamese, Thai and English Education have been established. Recruitment of undergraduates in English, Vietnamese and Thai began in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.The workforce is 45, including 43 full-time teachers, 1 secretary and 1 full-time instructor. 30 teachers have obtained their master’s degree or above, accounting for 66.7% of the staff. 9 teachers have been given titles of a senior professional post; 14 have been given titles of medium-grade professional post. 7 foreign teachers from the United States, the UK, Vietnam and Thailand have been employed; 2 professors from prestigious institutions at home and abroad and 1 external teacher have been invited to give lectures. Teachers have made 25 trips for overseas studies and employment record, holding 58.1% of full-time teachers.

School of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to the cultivation of teachers. Ever since 2013, as many as 26 study visits have been made to further their studies at Lindenwood University in Missouri State, University of Aberdeen in the UK, Thai Nguyen Universityin Vietnam abroad and Beijing Normal University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai International Studies University and Northeast Normal University at home. 16study visits have been made to the United States, Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar to exchange and communicate. Besides, a total of 219 visits to Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Xiamen, Hunan, Guangxi and Kunming for academic conferences, training and exchange have been made.
